Hail To The Victors

President Obama unveiled the central theme for the Democrats’ 2012 campaigns at a recent speech in Ann Arbor in which he blamed rich people on the University of Michigan.  Or something.

His point was that no one could succeed without public institutions like the University of Michigan discovering things - with government funding.  He used the example of the internet, although he left out the part about its most famous prime movers being college dropouts, and the other part about government having virtually nothing to do with everything we like about it.

Dropouts making good is quite logical, actually, since the things they learn in Econ 101 – supply and demand, price elasticity, marginal utility, and substitution effect – are useful.  It’s all that Keynesian macro stuff later on that twists the brain into a knot and dulls the competitive instinct.  Better to leave too early than too late.

Mr. Obama’s speech echoed the moral-takings theory of Massachusetts senatorial candidate Elizabeth Warren; namely that all 310 million regular Americans pulled a laboring oar to create infrastructure, without which the fabulously wealthy could never have gotten that way. And since the fabulously wealthy won’t “give back” enough on their own, the government has a moral obligation to take their property by force.

Good thing they only want our money, because it also would not have been possible for Halle Berry to come down to Rodeo drive to have her nails done unless the government built the roads first, and it sure doesn’t seem fair that one lucky guy gets to be the object of all her affections.   So does the government also have the moral authority to force Ms. Berry to give the all the boys in Barstow a tumble?  I think not, and shame on you, Ms. Warren, for even suggesting such a thing.

The first two problems with the Obama/Warren “give back” argument are 1) who does the giving, and 2) who does the receiving.  Infrastructure provided by government was paid for by taxpayers – i.e. the rich people - and the people who will benefit from the socialists’ increased rent-seeking will be the Democrats’ wealthy clients and donors, not the working poor at whom the pandering pitch is aimed.

Here is how trickle-up economics works in the real world:  the working poor will pay higher prices per filling to cover the rich dentist’s tax increase, and those new taxes will pay the Solyndra CEO’s massive severance bonus when it tanks.  Democrats call this infrastructure; people with common sense call it an outrage.

But the more dangerous problem with Mr. Obama’s lawful-looting strategy is that it abolishes property rights.  If the government can justify taking the property of the rich simply because government itself exists, then it can claim anything from anyone at any time.  Economic liberty and personal liberty are not separable – the taking of one freedom imperils all others.

Most Americans are still in denial that we now live in a post-constitutional and post-capitalist world - and it shows.  The reason we find our nation in such dire political straits is that we have rejected the Constitution and replaced it with…nothing.  And the reason we are in such dire economic straits is that we have rejected free market capitalism and replaced it with…nothing.  We elect bad lawyers to high office and they just make it up as they go.

The President has made his contempt for the Constitution plain to the American people in recent weeks.  He has made appointments without consent of the Senate while in session, ignored the Georgia court in the matter of his eligibility to appear on the ballot, he has taken the authority to indefinitely detain without charge, and he has scoffed at the separation of powers, taunting Congress in their chambers at his State of the Union address – justifying any executive action solely on the basis that Congress did not take it.

Democrats cheering their guy on for such bold leadership should take pause and remind themselves that each new power ceded to President Obama will be wielded by the next President Bush, or President Palin, or someone even less tolerable.

Will you guys still be doing your touchdown dance when President Santorum tells the Supreme Court he has banned abortions by decree since they didn’t act?   When President Scott Walker enacts nation-wide Right-To-Work by executive order, will Mr. Obama’s king-for-a-day precedent still seem like such a good idea?

Of course we need infrastructure.  Of course we need a viable public sector to provide needed services that all Americans benefit from.  But those things make up a small fraction of the government budgets that are now consuming our national wealth and cannibalizing our private sector.

The President’s “you didn’t act” doctrine removes the protections of separated and limited powers that enabled this nation to flourish.  That Constitutional constraint of government is the real infrastructure which set the stage for wealth creation in this country, not the public universities or the innumerable departments of good intentions that permeate government.

And the “giving back” that is really needed to restore American greatness is simply the giving back of our Constitution and the restoration of our economic liberty that have been taken from us bit by bit over a century of socialist progressivism.

The University of Michigan’s fight song is “Hail to the Victors”, not “Hail To Everybody Who Lives In Michigan And Votes Occasionally.”  Well, not yet, anyway.

Dr. Tim: When you assert,

"But the more dangerous problem with Mr. Obama’s lawful-looting strategy is that it abolishes property rights. If the government can justify taking the property of the rich simply because government itself exists, then it can claim anything from anyone at any time. Economic liberty and personal liberty are not separable – the taking of one freedom imperils all others."

it causes me to reflect upon the great revolutionary philosopher Adam Smith who, in The Wealth of Nations, wrote,

"Every tax, however, is to the person who pays it a badge, not of slavery, but of liberty. It denotes that he is subject to government, indeed, but that, as he has some property, he cannot himself be the property of a master."

Libertarians have truly lost their way...

Hi, muttmutt - I don't think that particular quote ranks very high on the list of libertarian favorites, but I am happy that I gave you cause to reflect - that is always a good thing. In post-revolutionary war America, the tax burden was about 3% of GDP federal and under 10% in total with local and state taxes included. Should you be suggesting we return to those levels, then perhaps you and I have finally found something we can agree on. Best Regards, Tim.

muttmutt said...

Dr. Tim: Certainly you can't be asserting an originalist position on taxes, can you? Surely you're not that naive to think that we still live in 1787 with the problems people faced in 1787?

Beware of originalism, it is a false path that ends badly.

MuttMutt, I believe you brought up the quote from 1787, not Dr. Tim.

muttmutt: There are many things that have changed since 1789, but Human Nature is not one of them. If you don't understand that, then it is you who are naive.

Jay: No, i was referring to Dr. Tim's statement

"In post-revolutionary war America, the tax burden was about 3% of GDP federal and under 10% in total with local and state taxes included. Should you be suggesting we return to those levels, then perhaps you and I have finally found something we can agree on."

My point was that we don't live in 1787 and the tax levels and GDP of 1787 are not an appropriate analogy for today. America at the time was not a "capitalist" economy (capitalism had not yet been born), we were a "mercantilist" economy. It's hard to derive economic analogies between two related, but not identical economic systems.

Again, I'm reflecting on the failures of "originalist" approaches to textual analysis, in this case, Adam Smith and the Constitution. There is an intellectual dishonesty to the "originalist" position that I explore in the post I linked to in my reply.

Give it a read and let me know what you think.

Muttmutt is Obama loving lefty. Of course he is going to be against anything that makes sense. Just ignore him and let him grow up and experience life, hopefully he will learn the error of his ways.

Tim, which explains how Walker who dropped out early effectively balances our budget and lowered taxes over these college nerds like Obama and former Senator Doyle!

Doug Dean: "Human Nature" is used as a universal signifier for "what I think is Human Nature."

Outside the realm of biology (the need to eat, sleep, excrete waste, breathe, reproduce), what IS Human Nature? Is greed "natural?" Is homosexuality "natural?" Is altruism "natural?"

Be careful assuming you "know" what Human Nature is. You may just find yourself on the receiving end of someone else who thinks they "know" what Human Nature is one day.

If that makes me "naive," then so be it. It keeps me in good company...

I'm still waiting for a link to keithh1981's blog where we can all feast at his table of ideas. How about it, Keith? Where's your blog? You do HAVE a blog, don't you?

I do know you. Your profile says it best. Why don't you first explain your own interests on your own profile first. It is funny how you lefties can never answer a direct question.

We all know why. Anybody that has Lefty politics, Obama, you stand for gay rights, and social justice (socialism) is an ignorant fool. You been exposed by more than me here. Good day.

To what specific data do you refer?

You do realize that it is impossible for the US to become insolvent, right? Please tell me you understand that much, at least...

Wow, now people need to have a blog! Sorry, i asked you directly first to explain your own interests. You personally admmitting you do not agree with the blog posting and in discussion I asked you to explain your interests since you have an obviously different viewpoint than the rest of us that are regular readers here.

I don't have to explain my beliefs to a guy who cannot answer a direct question and just turns the topic around just because you have no case. We are not going to waste our time reading a ignorant lefties blog when you cannot even explain yourself in discussion. You are a troll and obviously trying to get a rise from people. We know you are a lefty, Obama die hard and believe government should run your life because you list social justice as a interest. We already found out you do not even know the origins or reality of social justice because all you do is recite some blog or quote that best supports your tainted view but never be your own man and recite what you personally know.

So no, we are not going to waste our time visiting a blog site when you cannot even in discussion which you claim to be for explain your outside views and sidestep any opportunity to better debate what we are discussing.

Those little hyperlink things are the "substantiation" you're looking for. Just in case you were wondering...

Like so many of Dr. Tim's commenters here, you seem to prefer dealing in generalities, but shy away from the specifics of what I've written. I include those hyperlinks so that you can explore and challenge my interpretations and observations. I'm disappointed that so few of you are willing to actually engage.

It's been my experience (here and elsewhere) that the unwillingness to deal in specifics results from a failure in comprehension on the part of the reader.

"Behold, the waliking (sic) poster boy of College Critical Theory Indoctrination."

You have an issue with critical theory? What specifically bother you about critical theory?

If you don't want to actually engage in a dialog driven from the work that Dr. Tim posts here, why do you bother to respond to me at all?

It is amazing how you ignore the very aspect which the discussion in your profile is about. Now that you advertised yourself as a troll with every post only trying to criticize not discuss by twisting others words around to fit your arguments, and failing to honestly list your profile to make yourself look good, you obviously are an ignorant fool and that is me saying it nicely.

Again, why should we even bother viewing links to a ignorant and oblivious fool who cannot even give out his profile in an honest fashion and truly explain why he believes in it.

We already know you are a person that wants to get a rise out of everybody and obviously object to everybody that believes in limited and accountable government. You are a big government and dependent type of person because anybody that likes Obama and his big government beliefs is obviously needy.

keithh1981 said...

I do not think he is against critical theory, but to be able to have a theory you would have to be able to think, which obviously you don't.

But Cheers, again thank you for proving my point once again muttmutt, hopefully when you learn to comprehend what you are reading maybe then you can develop a critical theory on what and why you believe in social justice, Obama, lefty politics, gay rights and civil rights.

I mentioned civil rights because we actually believe in civil rights unlike the Democrats that largely voted against it. Lyndon Johnson actually needed help from a Republican from Illinois to get it passed. That is something you probably refuse to know. There is a lot more to the civil rights story, like it was actually written in 1957 by Republican Dwight Eisenhower but killed every time by Lyndon Johnson only to be used by Johnson later on to appease the black vote. There is a lot of civil rights that the Republicans were a championed with but people believe Democrats are the good guys.

Not saying the Republicans are angels and did no wrong themselves, but in terms of civil rights issues they have a very nice record.

keithh1981: My goodness, you CAN follow a hyperlink! You had me worried...

Here, try this on for size...

In the film Casablanca, Colonel Strasser, a German officer sent to Casablanca to re-capture the escaped political prisoner Victor Lazlo, confront's Rick (Humphrey Bogart), with the details of his past transgressions...
----
Strasser takes a little black book from his pocket and turns to a certain page.

STRASSER: "Richard Blaine, American. Age, thirty-seven. Cannot return to his country."

Strasser looks up from the book

STRASSER: The reason is a little vague. We also know what you did in Paris, Mr. Blaine, and also we know why you left Paris.

Rick reaches over and takes the book from Strasser's hand.

STRASSER: Don't worry. We are not going to broadcast it.

Rick looks up from the book.

RICK: Are my eyes really brown?
----

Rick's reaction to Strasser's attempts to intimidate him with the details of his life mirror my own reaction to your attempts to do the same here.

"Are my eyes really brown?"

"Muttmutt, again you show your just hear (sic) to get a rise out of people."

No, I'm actually trying to have a discussion, with Dr. Tim if possible.

I'm sorry if my ideas and positions are so challenging to your long-held beliefs. Perhaps those beliefs are wrong if they cannot stand a little critical scrutiny...

muttmutt said...

Et tu, Dr. Tim? Et tu?

Are your ideas so fragile, so delicate, that they cannot withstand the scrutiny of critical appraisal?

I'm disappointed. Not surprised, mind you, but disappointed. I expected that someone with your educational background would welcome some type of critical engagement on the ideas that shape our world.

I was wrong. I leave you to your echo chamber where, like the mythical Lake Wobegon, "all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average."

They key here, in my opinion, is there some people who can only value their self-worth with respect to others. Personally, I do not need to place myself on a spectrum of those who may agree or disagree with me, then make sure everyone knows how I feel about myself. All are welcome to their opinions, and I have no interest in wasting my time trying to change them.

There are some who pick fights with their fists, and others who do so with quoted and cited thoughts of others. No matter the form, all are still bullies.

Dr. Tim, I thank you again for succinctly writing what your loyal readers are trying to put into words themselves. I can say for myself reading your posts provides a relevant context to our current events. Thank you, and keep it up.

If you're going to post this nonsense on the net as a rallying cry to your like-minded Liberidiots then you should expect to receive feedback from those that disagree. You have the freedom to speak and we have the freedom to respond.
MuttMutt makes VERY valid points: You DO derive your income and your capitalist success directly from the very government you claim to despise. Graduated taxation is a tradition and a VALUE that is one of the cornerstones of American prosperity. It is in YOUR best interest to work toward closing the gap between the rich and the middle class, not widening it. History reminds us that you'll have a much easier time retaining your income if you’re not the target of those you’ve disenfranchised. Freedom isn’t free. How do you wish to focus your spend? On fences and security systems and body guards to protect your family and your possessions from the masses that you worked [personally] to disenfranchise? or to fund the infrastructure i.e. schools, police, etc that promote a better way of life and support the stability of our society?
You preach your 'what's mine is mine' foolishness to the same masses that you seek to disenfranchise. And they BUY it. It's amazing to some of us that 'there but for the grace of god’ go MOST of the supporters of yours and other uber-right philosophies. Complacency is NEVER a positive trait. Wisconsin teachers learned that the hard way. Likely >50% of them supported the current governor [and his 'conservative values'] prior to being disenfranchised by him and his ‘values’. I'm the last person to support people with no education hiding behind a union to extract exorbitant pay. A person that turns screws and bolts or pops rivets into holes all day is NOT skilled labor and anyone who believes that they deserve to live a middle income life in a blue-collar, single-income household needs to understand that that dream is long gone.
It's a fine line, this life of supply and demand. Skew it one way and the workers become complacent but skew it the other way and the Haves lose sight of what it really takes for them to have. It DOES take a village to make a village a livable place and folks will always have different opinions as to how much each of us needs to contribute but the idea that you can take whatever you can get away with taking without contribution of any kind is lunacy, not patriotic. Just because you do so under the fraudulent label of LIBERTY. It IS Solcialist and it IS anti-American. Look it up. There is no such thing as a society of equals: Socialism and Communism were just schemes [based on lofty ideals] to separate the haves from the have nots to the EXACT SAME END as Libertarianism.
And who wins? Cuba? N. Korea? Venezuela? To pretend that Libertarianism is somehow fundamentally different is foolish… with one exception: Libertarians are so conceited and selfish that they believe that they can sell their philosophy to the masses as something that the masses will embrace [not just in rhetoric but in practice]. Embracing Libertarianism is to forget the traditions and VALUES upon which this country was founded and able to flourish. So, if you want to live in a country of endless security fences, fear of imminent harm to yourself, your family, or loss of your possessions [or leave said country as a legacy for your children and your grandchildren] then continue your life of delusional complacency and selfishness. If, however, you want to live in – and leave for your progeny – a safe, happy, healthy country then remember that the more you have, the greater your obligation. You'll still have more than the rest of us at the end of the day and you'll have the freedom to enjoy it.
