And Now We Know

There will be no mining in Wisconsin.  Every Democrat in the Wisconsin State Senate, including the one who calls himself a Republican, just voted against the Mining Bill and the thousands of jobs it would have created in some of the most impoverished communities in our state.  They killed it.

For the past year we have had to endure an endless barrage of gas-bagging from the socialists in Madison, but when it came time to quit talking about the working man and actually do something to help him, Democrats closed ranks and voted against jobs, job creators, and the people who work.

There is an old saying that when elephants fight, the grass dies.  It is not always so easy to know which side to be on when the two parties start screaming at each other. Ever since the 2010 elections, both parties have accused the other of waging war on the middle class, war on the working class, and war on work.  We independents had to guess at which side was telling the truth, or perhaps I should say which was the less untruthful.

And now we know.

That is the importance of the vote on the mining bill today.  Oh, yes, and Governor Scott Walker was just declared the winner in his upcoming recall election.  He already had a double digit lead in the polls and a growing coalition in his favor – everyone who voted for him the first time plus everyone whose taxes went down with his budget reforms, everyone who got a carry permit, everyone who likes school choice, everyone disgusted with the antics of his opponents, everyone who opposes the idea of election do-overs on principle, and everyone who opposes rampant election fraud.

Now he can add all those reliably Democrat and underemployed voters in the northern counties who just got shafted, along with all those private sector union members who just got kicked in the groin by the same Democrat state Senators whose Illinois hotel bills they picked up year ago.  When you reach reflexively for that Kathleen Falk lever in a few weeks, comrades, just remember who it was that played you for a sucker.

In an irony of pure coincidence, the Wisconsin Mining Bill was killed on the very same day that our company was invited to come to Latin America to discuss new mining projects in Chile and Argentina.  Among other things, we make mining equipment in our Wisconsin and Michigan factories and half of it is now exported to other countries.  Good for us that our state’s mining equipment companies are still kicking; sad for us that our miners and mining towns aren’t.

And in another irony that is not at all coincidental, we received a bulletin today from the National Mining Association (NMA) alerting its members that the Obama administration has proposed new changes to the Surface Mining And Control Act that would effectively ban mining of up to 40% of coal reserves, cost 270,000 jobs and cut federal and state tax revenues by up to $5 billion per year.  Most of the jobs lost will be in impoverished rural Appalachia.

Democrats just don’t like miners.  Mining towns in rural areas are where the bitter gun and bible clingers the President backhanded in 2008 lived; and those were Democrats he was talking about at that fundraiser in San Francisco.  Like his counterparts in Madison, the President does not seem to care about the actual working men and women who make up the working class they claim to represent.

Business is hard enough without government making it harder.  The competition is fierce, customers are fickle, employees’ expectations rise constantly, new technologies threaten, credit is the tightest when you need it the most, the economy is unpredictable, and markets turn without warning.  There is no guarantee that any business, no matter how well established, how well run, or how profitable, will survive from one year to the next.

Our country is not creating new businesses at anywhere near the rates that made us the envy of the world for two centuries.  We have ceased to be the most desirable place to do business in the world, and we can thank our government for that.  Wisconsin has one of the worst rates of new business formation in the country. Why is that?  Just try and start up a mine here…

…and then you will know.

  1. You know what Tim? I bet you're right about the "bitter clingers" bit. The people getting those mining jobs would of course hold varying political beliefs, but I'd be willing to bet that the majority of them would be those flyover conservatives so derided by the left. It wouldn't surprise me one little bit if that fact didn't play a role in the Dem thinking.

Disgusting. But a HUGE opportunity for Governor Walker and the Republican legislators.

  3. To Senator Dale Schultz.....You might want to get your resumee updated. I hear Taco Bell is hiring, not sure if you are qualified however.
And as for the 16 Democrats that voted this down, your contempt for Gov Walker is really that strong that you would standing in the way of thousands of jobs, Billions in spending and revenues taken in by the state and the locals in Northern Wisc. You are really that full of IOUs to the Democratic party that you would piss all this away for the principal of th problm. REALLY!! Btter update your resumees as well. Sorry the Taco Bell in Hurley just went out of business. Thanks for nothing!!

  4. To Senator Jim Holperin too, Where were you today when your constituents needed a vote for the survival of the north. Haven't you noticed the problems here? Those jobs are badly needed for the working, self reliant people here. Whose resources are these? Who do you represent? All politics is local and people vote their pocketbooks. Give the constituents in the northwoods a chance to stay here and have a decent life.

  5. Completely agree. I would like to see how the liberals are going to spin and lie themselves out of this one. One thing is for sure they mo longer can look anyone in the eye and honestly say they are for jobs. Democrats did this to be against Walker but now they just made Walker's win total go up another 20% additiinal on top of the already huge lead he has already.

  6. Does anyone else also find it ironic that those same coal miners were among the earlier groups to form unions? Well written, as always, Dr. Tim. Thank you.

  7. Maybe Wisconsin will soon be vying for Illinois in the race for the bottom of the barrel. At least you won't be alone.

There is a good chance that Wisconsin can get rid of some of their Statists, but I don't think we will be rid of the Chicago Machine anytime soon. They intend to ride us to the Pit.

    Regards, Dr. Dan

  8. It is amazing to me that not one of you people made one comment pertaining to the damage that this mine is going to do to the area. Everyone is so concerned about jobs that they are willing to throw common sense out the window? And for some miserable jobs. Most of the high paying jobs will go to people from out of state.

    1. Exactly. What about the wonderful hunting and fishing traditions of Wisconsin. Some things are more important than money. And our clean water will be ten times more valuable than any mine in the next decade or so.

  9. As a lifelong Californian, I'm still trying to figure out who has it worse: CA or WI. But with the re-election of Gov. Walker--congrats, by the way--and us Californians still stuck with Governor Moonbeam, version 2.0, I think WI still holds a lead, albeit small, over us Golden State citizens. We've had farmer's water rights issues similar to WI's failed Mining Bill. Yet, unlike WI, the CA electorate is still politically asleep-at-the-wheel. (Sigh.)

  10. Tim, This is excellent. You remain the sanest voice on the internet. I think you are right when you say Obama just does not like miners. I have many Ivy League educated liberal friends that speak with nothing but disdain for the unwashed masses--the soldier, the miner, the garbage collector, the factory worker, and anyone else that cannot track their utopian fizz where government controls every act of its citizenry. 'Doesn't like them' is exactly the way to put it. Their contempt of the worker is only over shadowed by their indifference to their livelihood.

First of all, it is funny how you liberals believe in all and every fear mongering lie out there.

If we pass Act 10 the sky will fall, teachers will get fired, class sizes would get bigger ouy taxes will go higher.

What actually happened, the sky didn't fall, teachers kept their jobs except for the few districts that rushed and kept collective bargaining till 2014, class sizes are getting smaller and more teachers being hired, and most of our taxes are going down!

This lie you heard about environmental concerns, lie made up by downtown Madison unions. We have other iron mine in this country and they do not have any environmental concerns! Please you liberals fall for every lie in the book, how about you fall for the truth this time! Ignorance is not going to escape you blame! In this day of information, there is NO excuse for you empowering yourself and knowing the truth.

Miserable jobs??? Last time I heard these are $65,000 year jobs! Can you be anymore dumber!

Out of state? How is people in Milwaukee and in the North out of state? This would bring thousands of jobs in state, to $65,000 year jobs and union too.

You can go ahead and continue speaking drum now, I feel you will not care since liberals are killing this country from jobs, debt and waste of brain power.

  12. I also forgot you unions goons said if we pass concealed carry there will be outlaws in the streets killing women and children and if we pass Voter ID we will disenfranchise people's votes.

In reality, no one went out like outlaws killing women and children and law abiding citizens show you liberals how to properly care and treat a gun.

No one was disenfranchised in our last voting a month ago. Ran like a charm only this time your unions couldn't vote dead people.

  13. Socialists killed the jobs in Milwaukee and the new socialists continue to kill jobs throughout the state. When are people going to wake up and kick them out of office before they kill every job opportunity in this state?

  14. ya know im for jobs i really am but are we willing to destroy habitat for our wildlife? that is what makes this state what it is. maybe the rebups or walker should not have taken so many jobs away and we would be in a good spot we are like way behind the country for jobs. if we didnt have a criminal in office that would help too, no i dont want anything from walkergate. hes a train wreck !!!! i say move on and mind jobs somewhere else

  16. The items Schultz was looking for in a revised bill were not unreasonable. When a bill gets pushed this fast and in this fashion, typically it means something doesn't smell right regardless of which party is pushing it. The Fitzgeralds share in the blame on this no mater how you all try to spin.

Up yours all you Lib idiots. The Dems successfully KILLED not only mining for a generation, but showed the country that WI is a closed minded, anti-business hole in the earth. You all scream for jobs, then when Gov Walker convinces one of the biggest job creators this state has ever seen come to WI, you Dems strike it down.

Your a bunch of hypocrite LIARS.

  19. Hey Keith1981, the union goons were behind the bill. They came out in support of it. Pay attention. If you want to live in a State that will remove ANY regulation a business wants removed to get jobs then move to Mississippi. Please. The mining company wanted to open that mine on its terms only. It wrote the bill and handed it to Mr. Fitzgerald. You don't think there's anything wrong with that?

    ReplyDelete
  20. It was private unions not the public sector unions. It is best to know the difference before you even try to come up with your excuses.

    ReplyDelete
  21. We have at least 3 liberals already come and made their poor excuses that has already been debunked so many times over. The unions and the union owned Democrats hate a honest man named Walker sooooo much, that they all voted against it, any other year they would have voted for this.

Anybody who thinks this bill was because of some crazy environmental concerns is fooling themselves. This bill was not rushed since it was talked about for at least 2 months now. Oh I forgot, you liberals need 3 months to at least come up with convincing lies how you are going to play politics vs creating jobs.

Walker and the Republicans are the only party to come with any job creating and helping bills period. You liberals like to whine and dine, but in a year and a quarter now, we have seen no results from your side. It's official, Democrats are against jobs because they would rather play politics and put their own selfish tantrums ahead of the best interest of the state.

Why don't you liberals buy a pacifier and just start sucking.

    ReplyDelete
  22. By the way, even though Walker is already predicted to kill your democratic challenger by a huge margin, thank you for giving us the working people in north and southeast Wisconsin. You just gave Walker a marginally big win in his redo election to a blowout win!

    ReplyDelete
  23. The mining bill was processed for 18 months and changed 22 times to accomodate concerns. The company spent $4 million on plans and studies and changes to accomodate local concerns. As far as I know, they complied with all standards and asked for no waivers. What they did ask for was certainty in the time and cost of a decision. That is not unreasonable.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Again there was no risk to the water. That is easily debunked by empowering yourself researching this yourself. Again, thank you for giving Walker more votes.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Knowing what we know about how much work and how many jobs that would have created and further supported, I can't for the life of me understand why those fools would tow the partisan line and vote against this mining project. I'm really at a loss for words. When we hear democrats talking about how important jobs are (I'm talking to you Jim Holperin) I hope everyone remembers this bill and what it's cost is to Wisconsin.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I too live in Sen. Jim Holperin's district. Last time I felt so disappointed in my lack of representation was when he fled to Illinois to avoid debating Act 10. The economy up here is anemic and he just cut off the blood supply. Time to drop the politics and listen to your constituents.

I understand everyones fraustration as far as killing the bill,The lost chance of creating jobs, the ever ending grief of Dems vs. Rep, but why risk the chance of destroying agricultural history ? Wisconsin has some the most prideful lands of our entire history; and you would want waste that away for a few bucks that you are not gonna see any way do to tax inflation to even to get the thought off the ground!
In opinion it is the carelessness of each governmental party that has drowned the very financial fiber of our exisitence into a non-existence. Shameful but true...either political party is worth the trust worthyness of our lives. We as workers period need to take our country back.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Again, why don't you do some research. There is no environment concerns because those were made up. If there was, you guys would have no problem showing us the proof. Why is the only proof you have is what some nutjob in Madison told you? The iron is there to mine period. It is not there for people to gawk at. It is a natural resource that is needed for jobs and products to sell and buy. Unless liberals have a better way to bring jobs which they claim to be about they really need to shut their chaps.

Again empower youself to know that you basically told the good people of the north who are struggling and southeastern who could use paid training and $60,000 + year jobs. Sorry that isn't pennies and definetely more than the average $24,000 year they make now.

Nice that you are going to screw hundreds of people just because you failed to do your own research. I also noticed today the Republican Party just got some new members today as there are people in the Democratic Party starting to see where the Liberals really stand for. Just because they dislike Walker they will screw 800 hundred people when they had 500 union members in Madison on Tuesday pleading with their party senators to vote for it.

They put partisan politics ahead of creating jobs and people on their side seen enough. You can only screw your own members so much before it becomed painfully clear they are full of hate filled crap. They were never for job just like how Obama screwed thousand workers on the pipeline a month ago, you liberals again screw local men and women, union workers jobs they need. Obviously the Democratic Party has shown nationwide they can care less about jobs and used environmental lies is bs because everyone knows that those are just made up scripted lies they use because they cannot come out plainly and say this is because Walker. Obama has yet to give a plausible reason why he killed it but the media even knows because the crazy environmental crackjobs put pressure on him and their one of his last true supporters in 2012 elections.

Democrats has shown they think they are elitists ignoring their own constituents for their own public union controlled directive.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It is also funny how these environmental idiots are hypocrites. Ever notice how they all cry about the animals or digging yet everyday they are wearing or using the very products they protest? Just like Occupy crying about the rich yet they are using and wearing their products. They benefit everyday from the products they have from mining, drilling and people who create yet they they use and buy it then turn around and complain about how they got it!

If these environmental freaks were truly serious, they will find a island somewhere, where the leafs and dirt as cloths because the very clothes we wear was made and transported by the very corporations and minerals/gas they protest. They would use horses and buggies and find all the nice historical ways of washing their clothes etc. Never mind they think they are saving the planet, I guess they think only they have the right to wear and use the products after all that darn protesting in the name of protecting the very thing they themselves wear and use everyday! Unless they do that these environmental idiots need to shut up.

Put their mouth where their heart is or just shut up. Who are they to tell us how to make money and create jobs when they can care less about jobs. In the next few years when more people move out of the north, how you going to enjoy the good outdoors when more and more people close down and move out. These environmentalist are nut jobs that doesn't think any farther than about their chants to save the very thing they wear and drive!

  30. I love the protect the enviroment for the animals. In Door county by my hunting spot there is an abandoned gravel pit. It is full of turkeys, deer and other wild life. the amount of land that would have been affected is minor compared to the total amount of land in Northern Wisconsin.

One more thought, if the glaciers come back, they better file a reclamation plan, when global warming goes away and we get back to global cooling argument (which they touted back in the 70's).

  31. Dear Unemployed North Woods resident,

Trust me, this is for the best. I know what is best for you. After all, I went to college (paid too much) and I drive a Prius. You can thank me later for saving you from these jobs.

Do you really expect me to head up north once a year with my bicycle and have to witness a 15 acre hole in the ground? Even though you are a hick, I'm sure you realize that this mine would have covered at least half of the north woods. Wouldn't you be disapointed if I stopped coming up there to order water in your bar while you check out my package so eloquently displayed by my bicycle shorts?

Besides, there are plenty of jobs up there for you. Try a meth lab, I heard those are safe and even, dare I say, profitable.

It's a good thing this decision was left up to us down here.

    You're welcome
